Counseling When one of our clinicians believes a person may benefit from medication for a condition presented by a client in sessions, we work with the client's primary care physician to refer for medical diagnosis. No one on our staff prescribes medication, that is not what we do. That is up to the individual's personal doctor to decide if a prescription is appropriate or not.
Dr. Scoggins comes from a family of health care professionals. Her mother was a career Registered Nurse and even encouraged her to also go to Nursing school. So, before she began her studies which led to her career as a licensed clinical mental health provider, Dr. Scoggins attended a two-year RN program of study. She also completed a 120 hour EMT course and became a nationally registered EMT, as well. She realized the field of work in which she wanted to dedicate her life to was that of being a clinical counselor and pressed forward in that direction decades ago.
Dr. Scoggins has, for many years, provided support to many clients with the most complex mental issues, clients that most other clinical mental health service providers turn away. As such, there are times when Dr. Scoggins needs to consult a medical professional to ask questions about medication that may be effective in treating these complex issues. That's when she turns to her family:
There are times when Dr. Scoggins needs to ask a question of a medical nature in support of a client who may not, at the time, have a primary care physician with whom she can consult. Her oldest daughter, shown in the image on the left, has served for nearly a decade as an urgent care or emergency room Physician Assistant. Even her sister is a Medical Doctor and has worked in oncology and family practice for decades.
Before you even ask, no, they will not issue presecriptions to any of Dr. Scoggins clients. Her daughter lives in another state and her sister lives in Germany.
When Dr. Scoggins contacts her daughter or sister to ask a questions regarding a client, of course, she has to have permission from the client before engaging in the discussion. The advise that Dr. Scoggins receives, she passes on to the client's primary care provider or, in the absence thereof, another medical services profession to whom the client has provided permission to discuss the case.
